Elon Musk’s War on USAID: A Power Play to Silence Investigators and Protect Starlink’s Russian Ties?
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
The richest man on earth, Elon Musk, is trying to kill a department, USAID, that helps the poorest people on earth because USAID has been investigating Musk and his Starlink company, and their ties to Vladimir Putin and Russia.
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Is this why Musk is attacking USAID?
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
It certainly looks that way. Elon Musk’s push to dismantle USAID aligns suspiciously well with the agency’s investigation into Starlink’s alleged ties to Russian interests. While Musk and the Trump administration justify USAID’s elimination under the banner of “government efficiency” and “cutting wasteful spending,” critics argue that this move conveniently shields Starlink from scrutiny.
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
If USAID’s investigation uncovered any wrongdoing, such as Starlink facilitating Russian communication despite sanctions, it could pose serious legal and reputational risks for Musk. His role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) gives him the perfect platform to undermine the agency investigating him, raising obvious concerns about conflicts of interest.
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
So, is Musk trying to kill USAID because it’s investigating him?
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
The timing and motivations are highly suspect, and many believe this is a case of the richest man on Earth using his influence to protect his business, even if it comes at the cost of humanitarian aid for the world’s poorest people.
We also have to highlight various lies about USAID that Musk-Moscow propaganda has been spreading over the past 10 days. Here is 3 examples out of 20 examples:
Lie 1: “USAID deployed nearly half a million dollars to expand atheism in Nepal to take it further away from Hinduism”
Verification:
- There is no evidence or official documentation to suggest that USAID has ever funded programs specifically aimed at promoting atheism in Nepal or distancing the country from Hinduism.
- Nepal is a secular state with a majority Hindu population, but there is no record of USAID targeting religion as part of its programming in the country.
Lie 2. “USAID started promoting LGBTQ agenda in 2023 in Nepal to destroy its culture”
Verification:
- USAID does support global initiatives to promote human rights, including LGBTQ+ rights, as part of its broader commitment to equality and inclusion. However, this is not unique to Nepal, nor is it an effort to “destroy culture” anywhere.
- In Nepal, LGBTQ+ rights have been gaining recognition over the past decade. For example, Nepal’s Supreme Court ruled in favour of LGBTQ+ rights in December 2007 (see Pant v. Nepal), recognizing gender identity and same-sex relationships compared to other South Asian nations.
- Any USAID programs related to LGBTQ+ issues in Nepal would likely focus on supporting local organizations working to advance human rights, combat discrimination, and promote inclusivity—consistent with international norms and Nepal’s own legal framework.
Conclusions:
- The claim that USAID is promoting an LGBTQ agenda to "destroy Nepal's culture" is misleading and politically charged. While USAID may support LGBTQ+ rights as part of its global mandate, this is not tantamount to cultural destruction.
- This claim is false and appears to be based on misinformation or conspiracy theories. Sources of such false claims come from:
- Political actors in Nepal exploit these claims to gain support from religious or conservative constituencies. By portraying USAID or other foreign entities as threats to Nepalese culture or religion, they can position themselves as defenders of national identity.
- External influence campaigns: China, Russia, several regional powers spread disinformation to discredit Western organizations like USAID and gain control over narratives:
- China’s influence in Nepal: As China expands its influence in South Asia, it has sometimes portrayed Western aid programs as tools of cultural imperialism to weaken their appeal.
Moscow’s disinformation: Russia has a history of spreading narratives that frame Western humanitarian efforts as destabilizing forces, particularly in regions where it seeks to expand its influence.
Lie 3. $7.9 M to teach Sri Lankan journalists how to avoid “binary-gendered language”
Facts:
- This project was indeed funded by USAID – see public data on usaspending.gov (FAIN AID383A1700001) and USAID webpage archives. Unfortunately, E. Musk took down their website to destroy transparency.
- The White House and Musk-related sources have criticized it as an example of wasteful spending since February 2025, although the program started on Aug 15, 2017 (first year of Trump in Office) and ended on Oct 14, 2023.
- The Media Empowerment for a Democratic Sri Lanka (MEND) program was launched in August 2017 by Trump’s admin to April 2023 . This 6-year initiative aimed to was to enhance citizens' access to balanced, reliable, and objective news across Sri Lanka, i.e. increasing media literacy among their citizens. It was a collaborative effort between the USAID and the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX).
I am all in on eliminating waste in government spending. The same goes for using foreign aid to serve the interests of our country as it serves the well being of the people of other countries, within reason and within morally acceptable standards. I am certainly disturbed by the notion that USAID may, in some cases, be directing aid to some programs or organizations whose goals or activities might be counterproductive to those of diplomacy. However, it seems to me, after reviewing this Framchange edition and some of the included linked articles, that the Trump Administration is, first and foremost, intent on eliminating any vestige of promoting a progressive agenda within USAID, as it has been with regard to all Executive Branch agencies, and garnering support and justfication by spouting out exaggerated or unsupported claims of malfeasance and even more nefarious behavior of agency staff; and whether or not one agrees with the intended outcomes, the fact remains that the President does not have the legal authority to eliminate an agency established by Congress or reorganize it without consulting Congress or hold up funds appropriated by Congress.

There isn't a government office or operation that doesn't need work. Balancing the budgets of the programs, more oversite and evaluating their value to the communities they serve is important, as is weeding out illegal activities such as using a humanitarian funding source to manipulate other countries, and who wouldn't want more money invested in domestic programs, but trump is a terrible business manager, (hence all his bankruptcies), and he has little experience with and insight on how these programs work, and the people he has brought into his cabinet to do these financial cuts and oversite are just as incompetent as he is. So, why would anyone expect this to be done well? At the same time, he is trying to shut down domestic programs where the money could be going. It's like he is irresponsibly taking a cleaver to a brain operation. I expect more damage to be done to our government in this new term than repair.
Katerina, do you really believe he has never had a bankruptcy? What happened to his casino in Atlantic City? Even he admits to going through bankruptcy. Is there one past business of his, for which he has many, that he is still operating? Where is his money coming from other than campaign donations, which is other people's money, or the selling of his name on other people's real estate projects? He may have some money coming in from his golf courses, but they are expensive to run, and no one has become a billionaire from golf courses. Yes, musk in the richest man in the world but you need to understand how that happened, and it has nothing to do with running government office and programs.

I oppose the destruction of USAID. It is less than 1% of the budget, promotes goodwill, provides lifesaving AID!
In addition to employment to the workers administering the aid - 10,000 before trump, yesterday 300, today 2,000. Temporarily while it’s hashed out.
From the other side, I appreciated the comment that some assistance does not make it to those who need it.
